Therapy Dog Training & Testing Resources

General Information
order to qualify for therapy dog work. If you choose to pursue basic skills classes with
your dog, we strongly recommend you train with a professional dog trainer who utilizes
only positive reinforcement techniques.
Training your dog (any dog, not just a potential
therapy dog) with punishment and negative reinforcement will damage the relationship
between you and your dog and can lead to mistrust and unpredictability.

Therapy dogs are not tested through Compassionate Canines, Inc. However, several
members of Compassionate Canines are testers for Therapy Dogs, Incorporated, a
non-profit organization based in Cheyenne, Wyoming that registers more than 12,000
dogs each year.
Therapy Dogs, Incorporated testers are volunteers who test and observe
dogs in their own communities using the test and observation guidelines provided by
Therapy Dogs, Incorporated. Once dogs successfully complete the Therapy Dogs,
Incorporated test and required observations, they may submit the appropriate paperwork
(provided by the tester) for registration with Therapy Dogs, Inc. Once a handler-dog team
are registered with Therapy Dogs, Incorporated, they are eligible for liability insurance
through a third party that works directly with Therapy Dogs, Incorporated. For complete
details, please
visit Therapy Dogs, Incorporated's website and click on "how to become a
member".
